It's his birthday. A minor one — thirty-one, or forty-three, a number nobody throws a party for. Throw the party anyway. Overreact to it in the correct order, because order is most of the ceremony.
- One sash. Satin, full shoulder, lettered with his new age in numerals sized to be read from a moving vehicle. This is a functional requirement. A vehicle will be moving.
- One medal. Die-cast, on a striped ribbon, chosen for weight instead of value. A medal is experienced by the neck. His should tell the neck the year was heavy with achievement, unspecified.
- One proclamation. Printed, bordered in a manner that means business, rolled and ribboned, read aloud from the porch or the apartment hallway in a tone suitable for founding a nation.
- Two window placards, MOTORCADE and PLEASE WAVE, mounted on the car. Fleet size: one. Route: his street, both directions, slowly enough to be witnessed.
He'll say you shouldn't have. You did anyway, because it's his birthday and somebody had to. The sash is his to keep, the medal gets worn to brunch, and the proclamation lives on the refrigerator at eye level until further notice.
