The Incident — Marcus finished last in our fantasy league. He was mathematically eliminated in week nine and spent the remaining weeks proposing rule changes. He described his draft strategy, afterward, as "ahead of its time."
The Response — The league commissioned a trophy. A real one: fourteen inches, marble base, a figure the awards catalog lists as "generic athletic." The brass plate carries his name, the season, his final record of 3–11, and the words LAST PLACE, EARNED. It cost more than the league's first-place payout. The expenditure passed by vote, eight to one.
The Escalation — Presentation took place at the following year's draft: brief remarks, a printed program, one minute of silence for the season itself. The program reproduced his week-by-week scoring without comment. The shop confirmed in writing that the plate cannot be removed without visible damage; this confirmation was framed separately and presented alongside the trophy.
Current Friendship Status — He keeps it displayed. Living room, center shelf, eye level. He dusts it. New guests are told the story by Marcus himself, at length, including the vote count.
