At the end of the season, hand Greg a written performance review of his golf. The subject is the golf. Greg is implicated on every line.

You compiled it from the seat beside him in the cart, and it reads by category:

Pace of Play: Hostile. On the sixth hole the group behind waved. Greg logged the delay, in his own account, as wind.

Equipment Expenditure: Exceeds Expectations. A new driver was bought in the offseason to fix a slice the review locates in Greg. Season's acquisitions: $1,340, announced per purchase at the first tee.

Score Reporting: Creative. A 5 was recorded on the twelfth. Witnesses recall the twelfth.

Cart Operation: Confident. Operated at capacity, on slopes, with commentary.

Discusses Golf While Not Golfing: Exceptional. Documented at two weddings and a parent-teacher conference. The category ceiling has been raised twice for him.

Goals for next season go under the ratings: break 90, or amend the definition of breaking 90. Overall: Greg is retained. Retention was never in question — you'd take him in the cart over anyone. The review just puts that on file.

Hand it over at the final round, in the clubhouse, before the check arrives. Questions in writing, before the season opener.

Make It Worse

  • Schedule the mid-season check-in for the tee box of a par three, while the group behind waits
  • Enter 'Course Management' as a development area; decline to define it
  • Provide a copy to the pro shop, for the file they will now have to start
  • Hold a calibration session with the rest of the foursome; Greg attends the second half
